Can Hula Hooping Slim Your Waist?

Can Hula Hooping Slim Your Waistline? I get asked that question quite a bit.

Check out my thoughts on the matter!

So.. can hula hooping actually slim your waist? My answer is: Yes! Absolutely!

I, regretfully, did not measure my own waist when I started my hula journey in 2021. Today, the visual difference is undeniable (check out my comparison photos at the end of this post). I have most definitely lost several inches from my waist & hips. My main form of exercise for the past two years has been hula hooping. Don't believe me? A good friend of mine (who happens to be a NASM personal trainer) recently told me that she has personally lost 3 inches from her waistline as a result of hula hooping regularly. She fell off track during Covid and decided to pick her hoolahope flow hula back up. Her results are incredible!

Still don't believe me? Let's ask science! A study consisting of 13 women found that the women lost, on average, 3.4 centimeters (cm) around their waist and 1.4 cm around their hips as a result of exercising with a weighted hula hoop for 6 weeks. The study was conducted in 2015 and can be cited here: A six-week trial of hula hooping using a weighted hoop: effects on skinfold, girths, weight, and torso muscle endurance - PubMed (nih.gov) .

Hula hooping classes, such as Hoola-fit, can help you burn upwards of 420 calories per hour. Hula hooping is an incredible source of cardio that also forces you to involve your core muscles, simultaneously. It is near impossible that regular use of your hula would not yield results such as loss of inches in your waist & hips.

I cannot stress enough that consistency & proper diet are important factors to yield results with any exercise program. This informational post is just that. Informative. Use it as inspiration to help motivate you to get started on an incredibly effective hula hooping fitness journey! Everyone will have individual results based on their own individual journeys.

As an ACE certified hula fitness instructor, I do not recommend using a weighted hula hoop that is over 2 pounds (lb). My handmade hula-hoops weigh about 1.2-1.5 pounds and are the ideal weight to safely use for a regular hula fitness program either in the studio or at home.
